Aiken, South Carolina - the “Winter Colony”

Aiken, SC, is a small country town with a population of about 26,000 inhabitants.  In the late 19th century, Aiken gained fame as a wintering spot for wealthy people from the Northeast, who were lured to the area by the opportunities for equestrian sports, thus establishing Aiken’s celebrated “Winter Colony.”  There are lots of people with money and horses...

South Carolinians love the Germans.... almost everyone has some ancestry from Germany. Michael advised me NOT to mention that I was from Germany, but instead say that I am from Australia. But of course I forgot when we went into a haberdashery shop.... half an hour later, we knew the shop keepers German family history, after she welcomed us to Aiken and the States..... I will learn in time!

To my horror I discovered that there is no public transport in Aiken.  There are four taxis, and the only time I saw them, was outside the one and only nightlife spot in town.

You have the one main street: Historic Aiken, with shops and restaurants, the rest is residential.  Aiken runs in a grid, so you can't really get lost.  Michael lives in a nice estate 10 minutes walk from Historic Aiken. It is a pretty town.

I managed to walk 45 minutes to the Farmers Market, which was very tiny, with farmers selling their produce and nothing else (not like in Sydney where you can spend the morning and have your breakfast and do your weekly shopping).

Another time I walked 50 minutes (one way) to WalMart.  There was a pedestrain path but no pedestrain crossings anywhere - and the streets are wide and busy.
These walks are very exhausting, as don't forget, it is hot 40something C and humid.....  Yes I am the crazy tourist....

A nice place are the Hopelands Gardens and Wetlands... where Michael and I managed to get lost on the 'Path for the Blind'.... ironic....They have a path with a rope and signs asking people to touch and smell.  However, we started the path from the finish line in reverse, hence we got lost.

Hopelands Gardens
The Gardens are lovely, but the Wetlands are two small lakes only... yes that's it. I kept saying where are the wetlands??? Am used to big areas with bushes and water etc... no two small lakes. (Hisham would say - this is one of your 'write-ups'... I used to collect info for things to do in the UAE, but more often than not, these would turn out to be flops... hence: one of your write-ups... ((you had to be there...)).

Welcome to America!

America, The US of A.
It's a different world.  And very different to what I had imagined, not that I am sure what I had imagined.

People here are very friendly, hospitable and polite.  Everyone seems quite self confident and proud.

They welcome foreigners to their shores, as they are very proud of America! (And I believe quite isolated from the rest of the world) They show their patriotism by displaying of the Flag everywhere...just in case you forgot which country you were in...

Some weird and wonderful observations:

  • There are no international news on TV!!! For 3 days the breaking news was about the courtcase of a polygamist of a sect,  and of course Obama's budget announcement!!! - Welcome to America
(Obama is not really liked in the States, everyone is giving him a hard time)
  • There is junk food and fast food chains everywhere!!! People are more concerned about healthy pet food than healthy food for their kids!!! - Welcome to America
  • Plastic is fantastic, they looove their plastic bags, individual plastic wrapping, plastic plates and spoons!!! One item is packed into one plastic bag, I am horrified!!! - Welcome to America
  • There is nowhere to exchange foreign moneys - the lady at the Western Union outlet called all the cities around Aiken - de nada!!!  She suggested I travel 3 hours to Atlanta International Airport to exchange my money into US$!!! - Welcome to America
  • There is no public transport in and around Aiken (we are in the country!)!!!  You have to have a big gas guzzling car/truck to get around!!! - Welcome to America
  • You can buy your groceries and also your guns (called 'sporting goods') at the same time at 'Wal-Mart'!!! - Welcome to America
  • The houses are very pretty, and picture perfect. Made in China, cheap and plasticy looking.  Everything looks the same, no individualism!!! You can buy one of these pretty houses for around US$150,000- what a bargain, never mind it will all disintegrate within 10 years!!! - Welcome to America

  • Customer Service:  friendly, but seems over the top and artificial.  Wait staff especially, live on a minimum wage of 2.5US$/hour, no wonder they demand their 10-15% tip!!! - Welcome to America
  • They use funny words like: gas (petrol), cash back (cash out), looking around (browsing), sherif (police), food market (supermarket), the list goes on... I need an interpreter!!! - Welcome to America
  • They don't have to have a number plate on the front of their cars, only in the back!!! - Welcome to America
  • The numbers for mobiles are the same as for landlines, hence when you call a mobile no. the receiver also pays for the call!!! And... they haven't heard of roaming or Canada.... I asked the question and got a blank look from the staff!!! - Welcome to America
  • They serve hot coffee (and refills), but not hot black tea only 'sweet tea' i.e. iced tea!!! (Mind you I am getting to like my iced tea!) - Welcome to America
  • They have historic train museums in every town!!! - Welcome to America
  • They air bad weather warnings over the tv!  Funny story:  I sit, watch tv (millionaire matchmaker - never know your luck in a big country...), a thunderstorm and lightning and lots of rain passes through, electricity cuts for a few minutes, everything goes back to normal, storm moves on.... Suddenly... at least an hour later, sirons go off on the tv and a hazard warning comes up.  There is me: where is the bunker??? quick take the rations and run.... (and don't mention the war!)... How utterly ridiculous.... I loved so hard, never seen anything like it!!! - Welcome to America

On the road again.... it's a song!

My three day trip:
New York - Pittsburg by plane
Pittsburg -  Aiken by road

Enjoyed a crispy morning in Pittsburg... and then we hit the open road....

The drive from Pittsburg, PA to Aiken, SC takes 8 hours - via West Virginia and North Carolina.  Beautiful countryside - can't get over how green it is here (I must have Dubai desert syndrome). It was raining part of the way.
The State Parks (as they are called here) cover a huge area  - I believe they are much bigger than the National Parks in Oz. The road climbed up the mountains in West Virginia to almost 3000 feet.

North Carolina:

Interesting sights: Lots and lots of big trucks... and ramps for 'runnaway trucks' - not joking....
mobile houses..... good old fashioned buses....and trailers with cars attached....advertising signs Mac Donads of course.... and weird traffic lights....

Michael showed me the damm leading into the Gauley river, where he went for wild water rafting earlier in the year.  Apparently they empty the damm once a year, which is the best time to wild water raft! (maybe next time....).
Michael: Rafting the Gauley River in West Virginia
.

We took a pitstop at the 'Waldhorn' German Restaurant,Charlotte, NC, for some good old fashioned German food: Spaetzle (did you not watch Masterchef's masterclass??) and Maultaschen (filled pasta pillows) and Laugenbroetchen (like a pretzel) - yummie.

And finally we arrived at Michael's home in Aiken, SC. - Home Sweet Home!

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

After an 1 hour flight, we arrived safely @ Pittsburg airport @ 4.20pm.  And, to my surprise, my checked-in suitcase had also arrived!

My brother Michael was waiting for me! Poor thing, anyway, he got an extra day's leave out of it....he had been on a long weekend in Pittsburg to attend a wedding and was staying at a friend's place who has a horse farm. Laura rides at show: show jumping, cross country etc, and is very passionate about the horses.  Her parents are lovely people. All very hospitable and nice.
I was hungry and wanted a healthy meal with vegetables, Chinese or Thai... Michael: what you mean healthy? You are in Amercia.... Great!  His 'garmin' (USA gps brand) found a Chinese place, where we got take-away in the little boxes - just like in the movies!! very exciting...

The countryside in Pennsylvania is beautiful and so green and lush, much like some of the countryside in Germany!
Spot the deer (no that's a horse.. try again)!!!

The weather was perfect, warm and fresh air!... however I have to get used to Fahrenheit and Miles and Feet and I don't know what?! This does mean nothing to me.....

Had an early night and slept like a baby.....

Who said travelling was fun?????

Well, it all started off  very nicely:  said my good-byes to Rima & Peter @ 5.00am on Monday morning - very sad to leave!! Dropped off the hire car at the airport, only got confused with the car parking and ended up parking the car on level 3 instead of level1 - but no problem...  they found the car! Also, remember my shouting match when I arrived?... they gave me the 25Dhs (12$) off the cost!  Yippie success!!!

Checked in, flight took off - love the big new A380 plane ... comfortable..., took my valium and off I went again into lala land....(no. upgrade to business class though... maybe next time)
14 uneventful hours later (Thank God!) - we landed at New York JFK airport!  Me, all excited - finally made it to the States! I had 4hours in between my connecting flight just in case of any delays, problems at customs or immigration.  People were telling me horror stories of hours long interrogations, long queues etc....  and I believed them.  Hence, for once, I did not carry any 'undesireable' goods (as I normally would on any of my travels....) and I was prepared for any questions about my past and whereabouts....

But to my disappointment, I got through without any huzzle or delays!  Had my fingers printed: "please place 4 fingers of your right hand on the screen Mam!"  ... ok.... where are my fingers???? (am totally jetlagged....).  then the same with my right hand, and oh yes the thumbs too!  Then the eyescan.  In between the customs officer asked me questions: "when did you visit the USA the last time" - never before!  upps... I keep forgetting that I had been to San Fransisco for a 4 day stop-over in a previous lifetime - but that surely doesn't count. Anyway, all went well and they actually let me in!!!!!

Off I went to the transit counter of Delta Airlines, where I was told, that my 6.oopm flight to Pittsburgh had been cancelled and they put me on the 9.30pm flight.  Oh dear,  this will be a looong day! OK, not a problem, at least they didn't charge me for my check-in luggage!

I made my way to the Delta terminal (a totally rundown, cheap looking place - not nice at all and very busy). I freshened up, ate something, sat on a very uncomfortable chair and kept nodding off. At about 7.30 p.m. I thought, ok lets find my gate and see what's happening.  I checked the board only to find out to my absolute horror, that my 9.30pm flight was also cancelled.  Now what???

There was chaos everywhere, long long queues at the Delta customer service counters "We are here to serve you" - sure....Two nice staff tried to help me and said that because of the weather the flights were cancelled, one said: You'll get a hotel, the other one said: no hotel, as the airline is not liable for cancellations or delays if it is due to the weather.  Great, which is it?? Why are other planes taking off and not Delta?

While waiting, I was listening to people telling stories and complaining and giving advice... apparently Delta are very bad and there are always problems, ... if you are not nice to the staff, they screw you even more,. .. no they don't pay for accommodation, they might book it for you, but unless you get a voucher, you will have to pay. etc etc etc....

I was sooo tired and jetlagged, and felt dirty, and just wanted to either just get there or sleep (preferably in a bed and not on the floor of a grotty airport terminal).

Anyway, suddenly there was another flight to Pittsburg on the board, leaving @ 9.15pm... how can this be???  It was now 9.00pm and I was next in line to be served....  the staff (I think she was a supervisor) first wanted to book me on a flight the next day, I had to point out to her, that there was a flight listed for tonight.  She checked it out, and booked me on it and sent me to another terminal and gate 11.

Off I went to gate 11, the same chaos there, long queues and lots of unhappy people shouting.... nobody knew about my flight.  They then sent me to gate 19, back to the other terminal.  At gate 19 I was told that the flight I was booked on was actually a fake flight, there was no pilot nor crew!  Great.... I am now pissed off!

Back I went to the supervisor - she: Oh I am glad you are back, we tried to page you, so sorry about this misunderstanding, come with me....  I can book you on a flight tomorrow @ 2.30 p.m.  Me: What?  I can not afford a hotel room, and I am really tired.... She:  Don't say anything, I feel so bad, we will take care of it!  So I got the hotel room paid for in the Quality Inn, Jamaica, 3 food vouchers each 6$ worth, and an airport shuttle 2-ways.

I couldn't retrieve my already checked in luggage (but made sure they matched my luggage with my new flight! and hoped for the best) , there were also queues and lots of unhappy and tired people. We all exchanged our stories and grievances... It would have taken them 3 hours to retrieve our luggage.  Instead they handed out a toiletry kit: t-shirt, toothbrush, washing powder, razor.. what no underware???... hi hi.  So I took the kit, got my minibus and off to the hotel.  There were also queues of people checking in, all with cancelled Delta flights and stories to tell.

I finally was in my hotel room just after midnight!.. and I had arrived from Dubai @ 2.30 pm.  Not my idea of a fun trip... am definately too old for this kind of excitement....No comment please people...

Texted my brother, who was waiting for me in Pittsburg... will arrive 1 day late.  He is georgeous, texted back, no problem, will take another day off and wait!

Next day, after a wonderful nights sleep in a comfortable bed, had breakfast (free) at the hotel, met some of the same people from the night before and some new ones... stories all round....We all waited for our airport shuttle, which arrived 1 hour late @ 1.oopm and my flight was leaving @ 2.30 pm.. nooo not again....., but all went well!

I flew in a little bombardier (ie. a tube) with a heavily pregnant flight attendant (oh dear, if any emergency happens, we will have to help her, not the other way round)... only in America....

But I must say, I was surprised at how curtious men are towards women in the States.  They helped me with my luggage, opened the doors, and were generally very polite.  I am only used to this gentlemenly treatment in the UAE, where women get preferential and respectful treatment.  Maybe not all bad here after all....
